Mariana Mazú
La bella Iniferencia
Mariana Mazú and her band ignored genre boundaries and traditions, letting their hearts guide their choice of music, and on this CD they combined sensitive tangos, tango canciones, valses or milongas with foxtrotts, candombes and Argentine pop.
Also the sound is often more oriented to Argentine folklore and singer-songwriter traditions than to traditional tango patterns. Mariana was all the more surprised that her 2021 CD was awarded the Premio Gardel as the best tango CD.
All eleven pieces, altogether restrained in instrumentation, are dominated by Mariana's bell-clear, powerful voice, which seems to sing to us personally. Varied, intimate, drawing from the sound cosmos of flamenco, she is accompanied first and foremost by the sounds of guitars, joined by percussion, bandoneon, bass and violin, sometimes restrained, sometimes poppier.
With all this diversity of genres, Mariana avoids the extremes with her pleasant, warm voice and instead presents the lyrics of the songs, some of which have accompanied her since childhood, lovingly intoning in a medium voice range. This rather chamber music CD is a fine, fresh listening pleasure full of hidden surprises.
