I will never forget the sensitive, powerful, precise live performance of the 'Cuarteto Ullmann' at the La Locura Festival in Innsbruck in 2024. Pianist Leda Torres, the arranger responsible for the band's musical spectrum, sees her musical roots in avant-garde orchestras such as the very early, little-known Piazzolla from 1946, the jazz-influenced Horacio Salgán or Eduardo Rovira, who most consistently crossed the tango with numerous other genres in the 1960s.
And so many of the arrangements, just like those of the Vanguardia role models, overflow with musical ideas. In contrast to the tangos we know from our milongas, they are characterized by surprises, discontinuities and even small dissonances.
