Caio Rodriguez, the charismatic tango tenor, has taken on a selection of Gardel's most famous pieces and recorded a new CD with his 'Hamburg Tango Quintet'. Of course you will find pieces such as Mi Buenos Aires querido, El Día que me quieras, Cuesta abajo, Por una Cabeza and of course Volver on this CD, on whose booklet the charming singer is pictured smiling with a red rose.
Caio Rodriguez interprets the pieces largely in the tempo and phrasing of the original recordings. His soft, flattering way of singing usually harmonises quite well with the orchestra. As usual with the 'Hamburg Tango Quinteto', the CD is well crafted and does not require any major electronic aids. I find Caio Rodriguez's project quite courageous and also successful, because one compares the performance with that of the great role model.
