Tango zwischen Himmel und Hölle
It's the question of Tango Argentino, with which Astor Piazzolla also had to struggle throughout his life: Is this Tango? This question also arises with this album. At first glance, Nostalgias, Milonga Triste and Romance de Barrio are three classics. However, singer David T. Schneider breaks them up by switching from Spanish to German in each case - and will stick to German on all further tracks.
The album develops its strengths in the self-composed pieces that move away from the tango, as in the ballad Umarmung or the chanson Entlieben (both by David T. Schneider). You can picture the singer at night, after a night of drinking, in a suit, under streetlights, lonely, philosophizing about life, love, longing and loss.
Yes, it takes courage to break the usual listening habits of tango, be it through variation of rhythm, through language, through character and the use of vocals. If the album would not run under the music genre 'Tango' - as the name of the formation actually announces - it would be recommended for fans of German singing, of chansons, ballads or jazz singing, because the musicians let their skills flash again and again.
